Mad March: energy in a time of war

Chaos continues in the UK gas and power markets. Continued conflict in the Middle East is driving instability in global energy markets, with major energy facilities damaged. The Strait of Hormuz was impassable for much of March, resulting in unprecedented market volatility and increasingly constrained LNG gas supply globally. Ongoing negotiations have provided some relief in the markets. UK gas prices have doubled since the outbreak of the conflict, impacting all contracts and establishing a new price range.

While stable fundamentals have helped to curb some volatility into April, storage levels are at record lows as the summer approaches. The challenge of replenishing storage over the summer is likely to further influence market dynamics. Markets continue to watch ongoing developments in the Middle East. The US issued an ultimatum to Iran, threatening significant consequences if the deadline of 7th April is not met.

As of today (8th April), a two-week ceasefire has been agreed that will open the Strait of Hormuz. This pivotal development has seen gas prices fall this morning, and all contracts reversing recent gains.
